Michigan Lottery Contributes More Than $1.2 Billion to Schools in 2024; Sixth Consecutive Contribution of More Than $1 Billion

School Aid FundThe Michigan Lottery contributed more than $1.2 billion to the School Aid Fund in FY24. It is the sixth consecutive year the Lottery’s contribution to the School Aid Fund has topped $1 billion.

“For more than 50 years, the Michigan Lottery has helped fund Michigan public education,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “This year’s contribution of more than $1 billion directly into our schools will give students the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond. From better textbooks and technology to newer science labs and sports facilities, these resources will go a long way. Congratulations to the Lottery team on another successful year, and let’s keep working together to build a brighter future for our kids.”

Since the Lottery began in 1972, it has contributed nearly $30 billion to the School Aid Fund which s public education programs in Michigan. In each of the last six fiscal years, the Lottery has contributed more than $1 billion to the School Aid Fund, totaling nearly $7.5 billion in contributions over that six-year span.

“I am proud to lead the dedicated team of professionals at the Lottery who are laser focused on raising money to public education in Michigan,” said Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli. “In addition to providing funding for public schools in Michigan, each Lottery ticket purchase also s local businesses, and in FY24 retailers earned more than $348 million in commissions. With about 97 cents of each dollar spent on the Lottery being returned to Michiganders in the form of contributions to the School Aid Fund, prizes, and commissions to local vendors and retailers, the Lottery has a profound impact on communities throughout Michigan.”

Lottery retailers in Michigan were paid more than $348 million in commissions in FY24. Since FY19, when the Lottery’s streak of billion-dollar contributions to the School Aid Fund began, retailers have earned more than $2 billion in commissions. Lottery products are sold at more than 10,000 locations across Michigan, including both independently owned businesses and large chains. In 2024, more than 760 retailers sold $1 million or more in Lottery games.

For the fourth consecutive year, Lottery players in Michigan collected about $3 billion in prizes. Since the Lottery began in 1972, players have collected more than $55 billion in prizes.

The Lottery is also committed to promoting responsible gaming. Michigan was the first state lottery to receive certification of its online program through the National Council on Problem Gambling and has also attained Responsible Gaming Verification through the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries. For each dollar spent on a Michigan Lottery ticket in FY24, approximately:

  • 62 cents went to players as prizes
  • 26 cents went to the School Aid Fund to public education
  • 9 cents went to commissions for retailers and vendors
  • 3 cents funded the Lottery’s operations and istrative costs

Under state law, all profits from the Lottery go to the School Aid Fund. Financial results reported in this release are unaudited and pending final review. Audited financial results and the Lottery’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report are expected to be available early next year.
